Bonfire night - also known as Guy Fawkes night - is a night filled with fun, fireworks and of course bonfire night food. As Bonfire Night is the 5th November it is invariably very cold and sometimes even wet, so warm, comforting and easy to eat bonfire food is needed.
What better way to spend Bonfire night than enjoying fireworks and food with friends and family. We've selected some of Manchester Fireworks favorite party food that will please both kids and adults. And the best part is that these recipes are easy to make and perfect for a cold night.
Food on bonfire night needs to be portable and warm the stomach as well as the hands so turn your fireworks party into a real sparkler with Warming food and drink to keep you going through the night.Luckily for the cook who doesn't want to miss any of the fun, you don't need to attempt any fireworks with the cuisine. Simple, hearty, hot food that's easy to eat standing up and doesn't need a knife and fork will work best for your firework party.

Hot Chocolate With A Twist
- try adding some Baileys, Cointreau, peppermint or cinnamon to your hot chocolate before finishing with a squirt of whipped cream and shavings of chocolate.
Toasted Marshmellows
- place a mixture of pink and white marshmallows on a heat proof skewer and warm over the bonfire embers to give a taste that will melt in your mouth.
Roasted Chestnuts
- place the chestnuts in between heat proof tongs and warm in the bonfire embers until the skins are soft and the insides tender. Serve in a large bowl.
Bonfire Baked Potatoes
You will need:
One potato
One long stick or instrument to shove the potato into the bonfire
Butter, salt, pepper, and other condiments.
Find a good potato and wrap it tin foil.
Take your long stick or instrument to shove the potato gently into the bottom of the bonfire. The base of the bonfire is where all the heat is, so watch your fingers and eyebrows.
IMPORTANT: Don’t forget where you put your potato!
About forty-five minutes later (one hour later, if you picked a very big potato), pull out that tuber and let cool for a few minutes.
Enjoy!
Baked Apples / Bananas
- remove the peel from the chosen fruit and place in tin foil. Using heat proof tongs place in the bonfire embers for 5-10 minutes. Unwrap and enjoy.
Toffee Apples
Bonfire night wouldn't be the same without this traditional treat - a firm favourite with children adults and all the staff at Manchester Fireworks.
What you need
8 Apples
225ml Water
450g Sugar
Sticks
What to do
Wash the apples and remove the stalks.
Bring the water to the boil adding the sugar. Stir slowly until the sugar dissolves.
Continue to cook on full heat until the mixture has turned golden brown.
Whilst the mixture is cooking insert the sticks into the bottom of each apple.
Remove the mixture from the heat and leave it to stand for a few minutes before dipping each
apple into the mixture until fully covered.
Place the apples on a plate to set.
Bonfire bangers
These bonfire night bangers are tried and tested by the Manchester Fireworks team and will be a treat for bonfirenight.
Ingredients
1 lb. (450g) cocktail sausages
2 oz. (50g) cheddar cheese, grated
2 x 15 oz. (440g) cans baked beans
2 lb. (900g) potatoes, peeled and sliced
2 oz. (50g) butter
salt and pepper
Instructions
Pre-heat oven to 375F, Gas No 5, 190C.
Put the cocktail sausages in a baking tin and cook in the pre-heated oven for about 20 minutes, or until browned.
Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, drain and mash with butter.
Mix the cheese into the potatoes and season to taste with salt and pepper.
Heat the beans in a saucepan and add all but 8 of the cocktail sausages.
Transfer the beans and sausage from the pan into a serving dish, cover with the mashed potato mixture, and press the remaining sausages half way into the top of the potato mixture.
Place the dish under a grill until the potato topping is lightly browned.
Parkin Cake
A northern favourite that tastes delicious wherever it is eaten.
What you need
8 oz Self Raising flour
8 oz Oatmeal
2 tsp. Ginger
1 tsp. Bicarbonate of Soda
4 oz Margarine
4 oz caster sugar
1 egg
200ml milk
4 oz golden syrup
What to do
Mix together the flour, sugar, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl.
Taking a small pan, mix together the butter and syrup over a medium heat until the mixture has melted and become runny.
Add the butter and syrup slowly into the bowl and stir until the mixture begins to thicken.
Taking a separate bowl beat the egg and milk together.
Add the egg and milk to the rest of the mixture and continue to stir until smooth.
Pour the mixture into a tin lined with greaseproof paper and bake at 150c for one hour.
Bonfire Treacle Toffee
Treacle toffee is a firm favorate of most of the staff at Manchester Fireworks its
a sweet sticky treat to be enjoyed by all - just make sure your fingers don't stick together!
What you need
16 oz brown sugar
125 ml water
4 oz black treacle
4 oz golden syrup
1 tsp white wine vinegar
3 oz unsalted butter
What to do
Add all the ingredients into a large saucepan and melt over a medium heat for 5 minutes.
Once the butter has melted, increase the heat and cover leaving the mixture to boil for two minutes.
Next, test whether the mixture is ready by adding dribbles of water. If the water turns hard this indicates that the toffee is ready.
When the toffee is ready pour into a greaseproof tin and score into squares before the mixture sets.
Once set break into squares and serve.
Remember to store any leftovers in an airtight tin.
Spicy Potato Wedges
Nice and Spicy - perfect to set tongues alight.
What you need
Potatoes
A packet of fajita seasoning mix
3 tbsp olive oil
What to do
Wash and dry the potatoes removing any traces of dirt.
Cut each potato lengthways making four quarters before then cutting the remaining pieces in half.
In a separate bowl mix together the olive oil and fajita seasoning.
Coat each potato wedge into the mixture.
Place the wedges into a roasting tin and bake for 20 minutes in the oven until golden brown.
Tip: Add a spicy salsa dip for an added kick.
Irish Coffee
This Irish coffee recipe is quick and fun and it is elegant and sophisticated. It’s great for when you have a lot of people over and perfect for cold nights and bonfire parties.
Ingredients
six ounces of hot, fresh brewed coffee
1 teaspoon of brown sugar for sweetness
1 ½ ounces of your favorite Irish whiskey
heavy cream
Directions
Here is a basic Irish coffee recipe: Using the heavy cream, whip it until it becomes whipped cream. You can add sugar and confeccionate sugar to sweeten. Place into the refrigerator to chill. Once your fresh coffee is brewed, combine it with the whiskey and sugar. Mix it well until the sugar dissolves. Take the whipped cream out and place it on top of the Irish coffee mixture. And voilá, you have in your hands your first homemade Irish coffee recipe.
Hot Toddy
Ingredients For A Hot Toddy Drink
A wee dram of whisky
1 teaspoon honey
Boiled water
1 slice fresh lemon/lemon squash
1 pinch ground nutmeg (optional)
1 cinnamon stick (optional)
1 clove (optional and needs to be removed along with the cinnamon stick before drinking the hot toddy)
1. Put the honey into a mug and disolve in a wee bit of boiled water.
2. Add the whisky depending on your taste. 1 -2 tablespoons is recommended.
3. Top up with more boiled water. Add the cinnamon stick and cloves if used. Leave to stand for about 5 minutes. Remove the cinnamon stick and any cloves used.
4. Add the fresh lemon/lemon squash, stir well, then sprinkle with a pinch of ground nutmeg if used then serve.
WINTER PIMMS
Pimm’s No. 3, or Pimm’s Winter as it is now called, makes a perfect punch to warm you up when the sun goes in! Its brandy base is flavoured with cinnamon, zesty orange and caramel.
Simply mix 1 part Pimm's Winter with 3 parts clear apple juice, add some orange and apple slices, and heat gently. It also tastes delicious cold, mixed with ginger ale or lemonade.
